LymphaTouch in women's health physiotherapy: scars, swelling and fascia

Women's health physiotherapists Tuuli Luhtalampi and Annakaisa Hinkkanen share how they use LymphaTouch for C-section scars, pregnancy-related swelling and fascial restrictions.

LymphaTouch negative pressure therapy supports the treatment of C-section scars, pregnancy-related swelling and fascial restrictions, particularly in postpartum recovery. In this article, two experienced Finnish women's health physiotherapists, Tuuli Luhtalampi and Annakaisa Hinkkanen, share practical insights from using LymphaTouch in everyday clinical practice. They first presented their experiences in a webinar in June 2025.

Annakaisa Hinkkanen is a physiotherapist in private practice in Jyväskylä, specialising in women's health and pelvic floor dysfunction. She has close to ten years of experience in the field, with a particular interest in C-section scars, abdominal surgery and overall body control.

Tuuli Luhtalampi runs her own practice, Luhtavilla Liikunta & Fysio, in Espoo. She focuses on postpartum recovery and exercise guidance for mothers, combining physiotherapy with coaching, and uses LymphaTouch especially for scars, swelling and fascial tightness.

Why use LymphaTouch in women's health physiotherapy?

In women's health, manual techniques and exercise programmes alone often fall short with deep tissue adhesions, persistent swelling or sensory issues. LymphaTouch offers a gentle, non-invasive approach that complements standard rehabilitation methods.

Both physiotherapists originally started using the device for C-section scars. Today it is part of treatment for almost every client.

Key benefits

  • Improves scar mobility and elasticity
  • Stimulates lymphatic flow to reduce swelling
  • Releases fascial restrictions
  • Makes treatment comfortable for the client
  • Supports therapist ergonomics and efficiency

“Getting started with the device was really easy, and the effects surprised me.”

“Now I wouldn't run a session without it.”

Scar management after a C-section or abdominal surgery

Scar tissue after a C-section or abdominal surgery can cause:

  • Tension and pulling sensations
  • Sensory disturbances, such as numbness or hypersensitivity
  • Fear of movement or discomfort during exercise

Clients do not always recognise these problems themselves before the scar is assessed. With LymphaTouch, the tissue is gently lifted and mobilised, which allows:

  • Assessment and treatment of areas with reduced sensation
  • Improved circulation and healing
  • A painless treatment experience
  • Restoration of movement and sensation
  • Less fear of movement and better body awareness

“The most common comment is: now the blood is flowing! My belly feels lighter and it's easier to stand up straight.”

The response is often visible in the first session, and many clients need only one to three treatments to benefit significantly.

Cases from clinical practice

  • A client after a C-section was afraid to exercise because of scar tightness and described a feeling that the scar was tearing. After three LymphaTouch sessions, she enjoyed exercise again and the scar no longer bothered her in daily life.
  • Annakaisa's own abdominoplasty and rectus diastasis repair: Annakaisa tends to develop strong adhesions, so she began treatment immediately after the operation. The result was less swelling, better sensation and more elastic tissue.
  • An abdominal scar more than 50 years old had repeatedly broken down. After treatment the skin stays intact, and the tightness and chafing have eased.

These cases show that scar treatment with LymphaTouch can support recovery even years after surgery.

Swelling: a fast response and immediate relief

Swelling during pregnancy or after surgery can cause pain, aching and significant functional limitations. Tuuli regularly uses LymphaTouch to treat swelling in the hands and feet of pregnant and postpartum clients:

“A client could make a fist for the first time in weeks, and the pain was gone.”

Postoperative swelling is another key area of use. The treatment does not remove the underlying cause of the swelling, but it improves fluid movement, supports healing and offers clear symptom relief.

Fascial work and diastasis recti recovery

The pull of fascial structures in the back and flanks on abdominal muscle activation is easily overlooked, and it also affects recovery from diastasis recti. The physiotherapists use LymphaTouch especially to treat the back and flanks of clients with diastasis recti:

  • Releasing the posterior fascia helps the abdominal muscles activate
  • Clients often notice a difference immediately, both in the linea alba and in the shape of the abdomen
  • Therapist ergonomics: the device reduces the physical load of repeated manual work

“After the manual assessment, I switch to LymphaTouch. It saves my fingers and makes the treatment more efficient.”

Part of everyday women's health practice

Both physiotherapists see LymphaTouch as a natural part of their overall treatment approach. It fits easily with assessment, hands-on treatment and guided exercise:

  • Easy to combine with assessment and active exercises
  • Clients do not always even notice that a device is being used, and the experience feels seamless
  • Treatment responses are often fast and clear

“I use it in almost every shift, and clients like it.”

Tips for getting started

  • Practise on test clients to find the right settings and build your routine
  • Start with a manual assessment, but don't hesitate to use the device in the very first session
  • Let the client feel the difference. One session is often enough to motivate them to continue their rehabilitation.

Summary

For Tuuli Luhtalampi and Annakaisa Hinkkanen, LymphaTouch is a tool that genuinely changes the client's experience. Many clients are unaware of how much scar tightness, sensory changes or swelling affect the way they use their body until they feel lighter and freer after treatment.

“Many people can't describe the feeling exactly, but after scar treatment the body feels straighter, the stride longer and breathing freer.”

Annakaisa Hinkkanen

For the therapist, the device reduces physical strain and makes it easier to focus on what matters: the client's sensations and reactions.

“As a therapist, LymphaTouch is also an ergonomic tool for me. I can focus on the client without straining my own body, and still get results.”

Tuuli Luhtalampi

Client feedback and the concrete changes they see in their clients' bodies have convinced both physiotherapists that negative pressure therapy belongs in modern women's health physiotherapy.
